I was born on the first day of summer, a fact that I’ve cherished since I learned it. This post has very little to do with food and less to do with holistic health, but hey, it’s my birthday so indulge me. In celebration of my THIRTY SEVEN years of summer, here are some of my memorable and hilarious birthday moments.
I know all moms think their babies are gorgeous, but come on. Smushed and cone headed, this is a face only a mother could love…
Forget about cupcakes. For my first birthday I discovered fire.
The day after my fourth birthday, my sister was born. I’m quite sure my parents and grandparents made me feel pretty special about it, because I don’t remember wanting to send my sister back right away. I think that was the next year…
When I turned 11, I had this Hawaiian themed birthday slumber party. This marked the final birthday party of my youth. Us girls got into a scuffle, and at about 2am half of the pre-teens decided to walk home.
As you can see, I became clearly too cool for birthday parties anyway. Either that, or everyone was frightened away by that hair!
I spent about 10 years of my life submerged in chlorine. That has nothing to do with my oddities though. I’ve always been this way.
After I pulled myself out of the swimming pools, I had my tragic artsy phase.
Next up, the surfing days – pre-kids. My then pre-husband and I shared many a summer surf.
29 was a big birthday – it was the age my mom told me she was for my entire childhood. So to celebrate this very long upcoming year, I ordered up a whole pig – known as lechon baboy in my Filipino heritage.
Soon after that, birthdays became less about me…
This year, I hope I can spend my birthday doing this:
But it will probably look more like this:
And if I’m lucky, I will get some of this too…

This. Was. Awesome. Happy birthday, Emily!
Thanks, Heather! So far, I’ve already gotten to stay in bed while the family is plotting the grain-free brownies and foraging for bacon. Hoping the sun will come out so I can get to the beach!
Happy Birthday Emily!! Today is my daughter’s 17th b-day. One day when she was little she announced proudly, “June 21st is the longest day of the year!” I told her it surely felt that way when I was in labor!
