Loving this… September

September 26, 2012

Yes, yes… I know.  Halloween is a few weeks off yet, but it’s not too early to start planning, and I just couldn’t help sharing this vintage pic from my – FAVORITE – HOLIDAY – EVER! (I am the witch in one of the few homemade costumes – thanks, mom! xo)

My family is all geared up for this year’s costumes, and I’ll give you a hint: dum, dum, dum, dum-dum-dum, dum-dum-dum, but you’ll have to wait til Halloween to get a peek of our renditions of the classics!

What are you going to be?

WHAT???

You don’t know yet?  Please don’t tell me you “don’t dress up,” or we may need to stop being friends.

Really, though… I’m not joking. I take my halloweening very seriously. On that note, let’s get…

…Back to September

We have been enjoying a wonderfully hot Indian summer here in Southern California this month, but in the past few days the darkness has begun to creep in earlier. The nights are cooler, tempting me to pull out extra blankets and and light some candles. This post by Empowered Sustenance answered some questions I didn’t even knew I had about soy vs. beeswax candles. I will definitely be taking a close look at labels before I light another wick.

As the weather begins to tempt me with cool mornings, I find myself waking with visions of soup dancing in my head. This Coconut Fish Soup from Coconut Mama is definitely being served at my table soon. And if I run out of soup dreams, there’s always this awesome list of 12 Nourishing Soups for Autumn from Nourished Kitchen – this should keep me busy!

In light of my son’s recent matriculation into the public school system and the inherent temptation of JUNK FOOD that seems to come with it, I have taken upon myself to make a homemade sweet each week to keep him loyal to CAMP REAL FOOD. I’m looking forward to surprising him with Homemade Mommy’s  chocolate macaroons and Gutsy’s fruit leathers. I think both of my kids are going to love these grain-free, nut-free cheese crackers from Coconut Mama too.

I was shocked by the amount of paperwork that I needed to fill out to put my son in kindergarten, which had me revisiting my decisions around vaccinations. This great post by Mommypotamus gets into why-nots of the tetanus shot – one of the immunizations that alternative-minded parents often choose to give their children out of fear of them stepping on the proverbial rusty nail.

On a completely different note, I’ve noticed that I’m getting older. Strange that this phenomenon is happening to me, but it’s true. So I was relieved to read this post from Honest to Goodness Living, and I will be consuming large quantities of the ‘secret’ ingredient each day forward.

Three of my other favorite posts this month:

Finally, if my Halloween enthusiasm wasn’t enough to get you in the mood for trick-or-treat and costumes, check out this great list of healthy halloween treats from Mama Natural!  And a few more photos for inspiration…
